The EU caps aflatoxin at ≤ 4 µg/kg for imported star anise — extremely strict and 90% decided by storage at origin.

Compliant storage procedure

  1. Post-drying moisture must reach 10–11%.
  2. Hand-sort to remove split or blackened pods.
  3. Pack in 25 kg double-layer PE-aluminium bags under light vacuum.
  4. Store dry at 15–22°C, RH below 60%.
  5. Inspect every 30 days; sample for aflatoxin.

Strict no-go list

  • Jute or natural-fibre sacks — wick moisture and mould.
  • Direct-light warehouses — oil degradation.
  • Stacks beyond 10 layers — petal deformation.

“Five years of EU-compliant lots all came from stores holding ±2°C — stability beats absolute temperature.”
