The EU caps aflatoxin at ≤ 4 µg/kg for imported star anise — extremely strict and 90% decided by storage at origin.
Compliant storage procedure
- Post-drying moisture must reach 10–11%.
- Hand-sort to remove split or blackened pods.
- Pack in 25 kg double-layer PE-aluminium bags under light vacuum.
- Store dry at 15–22°C, RH below 60%.
- Inspect every 30 days; sample for aflatoxin.
Strict no-go list
- Jute or natural-fibre sacks — wick moisture and mould.
- Direct-light warehouses — oil degradation.
- Stacks beyond 10 layers — petal deformation.
“Five years of EU-compliant lots all came from stores holding ±2°C — stability beats absolute temperature.”
